About 71% of the earth surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold approximately 96.5% of Earth’s water. The five recognized oceans are, the Artic ocean, Southern ocean, Indian ocean, Atlantic ocean and the Pacific ocean.

So, how much do you know about these huge bodies of salty water? For instance, which ocean would you say is the deepest? Which one is the largest by area? In this article, I will help you find answers to some of these questions using intuitive data visualizations.

Which ocean is the largest?

Fig 1: World oceans by size

At 168,723,000 square kilometers, the Pacific is the world’s largest ocean. It makes up nearly half of the global ocean at 46.6% . It is followed by the Atlantic ocean which measures approximately 85,133,000 square kilometers — about 23.5% of global ocean. At 70,560,000 square kilometers, the Indian Ocean comes in at third. It covers an estimated 19.5% of the global ocean. The two smallest oceans are the Southern ocean and the Artic ocean which make up 6.1% and 4.3% of ocean-covered land respectively.

How deep are the oceans?

Fig 2: World oceans by depth

The Pacific Ocean is the deepest ocean in the world while the Artic ocean is shallowest. Notice that despite being smaller in area, the Indian ocean is deeper than the Atlantic ocean by about 95 meters.

How much water do they carry?

Fig 3: World oceans by volume

The Pacific Ocean carries nearly half of all ocean water. This is because of its large size and depth compared to the rest of the oceans.
